Earn It
Jason Sabat/ Skip Black
Doc 8-24-23
There I stood proud and ashamed
To receive our nations oldest medal
On an august day under starry skies
That’s a night I won’t forget forever
What did I do, what do I say
In a room full of soldiers who sacrificed the same
It was then and there I swore to leverage
This opportunity to share
From the DMZ to the sands of Ramadi
Todd, Kyle, and Luke left behind something and somebody
I remember their tears, sweat and blood
As it poured across my skin in the sweltering sun
They didn’t ask to die for you nor I
But they inspire me every to live a life
Worthy of their ultimate sacrifice
Chorus
I’m gonna share each moment and try hard every day
To live a life gracious and thankful
For what they gave
I know nothing is free and I sure as hell
don’t deserve it
But I’m gonna do my best
To earn it
It was in Tarin Khot mostly alone
Walking with our partners far from home
We were proud to serve and trusted those
Around us
Joseph and Timothy took a bullet
And now I know
We can’t bring them back
And I know they’re at peace
And I’m still humbled
By their solemn sacrifice
Chorus
When we speak their names they never die
We raise one up, we pour one out
Some left behind a full life ahead
And a family trying their best to move on without em
I will always stand up proud
And speak up loud about their service
And know I need to be a better man to earn it

It Won't Rain Today

It won’t rain today
Stetson wrapped in Calvary
A&M to the bone
blue-eyed kid from
Albany
Made Texas a home
He was born to lead
And was always
right up front
First to run into the fire
Where
The fight was won
He still watching over us today
I can almost hear him say
Chorus
The road goes on forever it ain’t all work no play
Love conquers all
and fortune favors the brave
Don’t give up on tomorrow
No, don’t give up on tomorrow
And it won’t rain today
Two-stepping Irish boy
With spurs on his boots
Bagpipes and fiddles
With an aggies attitude
When the work is done
And it’s
Time to cut loose
He’d be the first to buy
A round
Of Shinerbock or two
He still watching over us today
I can almost hear him say
Chorus
He still watching over us today
I can almost hear him say
Chorus

Things I Don’t Speak Of
Dave (Albany)/Pete Sallis
I was 24 when I signed up
First Battalion Alpha Company
I smoked my first Marlboro cowboy killer
First day my boots hit Vietnam country
Yeah the DMZ was hot as hell
In the bush for six straight months
Ended up wounded and sent to Japan
From the business end of an AK gun
I’ve got two Purple Hearts and one Bronze Star
Though I don’t like to talk about it much
I still get nightmares and I still wear the scars
From the hell I lived in for thirteen months
What these eyes have seen
What my heart has felt
Most days are way too tough
That’s why they will always stay
The things I don’t speak of
But I’ll tell you all about my wife of 53 years
A Navy nurse from the Golden State
We’ve got two sons and two daughters
Eight grandkids and a house on a lake
The more that the years roll by
The more that time steals away
The are just some things I keep inside
That I will take to my grave
I’ve got two Purple Hearts and one Bronze Star
Though I don’t like to talk about it much
I still get nightmares and I still wear the scars
From the hell I lived in for thirteen months
What these eyes have seen
What my heart has felt
Most days are way too tough
That’s why they will always stay
The things I don’t speak of
